About BacktestFlow

Never risk real money on a strategy you haven't tested.

BacktestFlow is manual backtesting software for forex traders, with a trading journal alongside. It exists for one job: turning what you actually did on a chart into evidence you can act on.

The product

What BacktestFlow does.

You replay historical charts candle by candle, without knowing what happens next, and place trades exactly as you would live. Every close is saved with its notes, tags and checklist. Statistics build themselves from those trades: the Verdict and Edge sections on the free plan, more than 40 metrics in five sections on paid plans. No spreadsheet to remember, no number you have to compute by hand.

Live trades have their own place: a separate journal with its own statistics and reports. That split is deliberate. Testing a strategy and executing it are different questions, and mixing the two records would blur both answers. Flow Coach reads each one with the same engine and tells you what holds up and what is still noise.

The whole idea fits in three words: test, analyze, improve.

The limits

What we're deliberately not.

BacktestFlow does not sell strategies, signals, or shortcuts. There is no system to buy here and no claim that trading becomes easy.

It is also built around forex, on purpose. Session aware candle alignment, statistics in pips and performance breakdowns by trading session are worth more when they are built for one market properly than for five markets approximately. The catalog reaches metals, energy, the dollar index, four stock indices, BTC and ETH, but every detail starts from forex.

Numbers

How we handle numbers.

Most trading tools will happily report a confident looking statistic from twelve trades. We think that is the central failure of the category, so the analysis is built the other way around: significance checks, confidence intervals and minimum group sizes run before a claim is made, and a written report can only quote numbers the engine actually computed. It cannot invent a statistic, because it never sees one that wasn't measured.

Editorial standards

The same rules for what we publish.

  1. Statistics are verified computationally before publication.

Confidence intervals quoted in articles are recomputed, not estimated. We have corrected published figures on this basis and will do so again.

  2. Shipped features are described as shipped, planned ones as planned.

If something is on the roadmap, the article says so.

  3. Comparisons mark where each tool leads.

Every table marks the rows the other tool leads, and the rows BacktestFlow leads. See how we write comparisons.

  4. Nothing here is financial advice.

Everything we publish is educational. Trading involves risk, and backtested performance does not guarantee future results.

Data

Where the data comes from.

Historical price data is served by an internal provider for supported instruments, with Dukascopy as a fallback: the same source many traders download CSV files from by hand. Replay runs on OHLC candles rather than tick data, and each instrument declares the date its history starts.

No. There is no system to buy and no claim that trading becomes easy. The product's only job is to turn what you actually did into evidence you can act on.

Its analysis engine runs significance checks before making any claim (Wilson score confidence intervals, standard error and minimum group sizes), and a written report can only quote numbers the engine computed. It cannot state a statistic that was never measured.

No. Everything published is educational. Trading involves risk, and backtested performance does not guarantee future results.

Test a strategy before you trade it. Replay it, trade it, read the numbers. Then decide.
