Feature comparison

Forex backtesting software comparison chart.

Eight tools across seventeen features, every cell checked against the vendor's own documentation. We make BacktestFlow, one of the eight. The picks below say when each tool is the right call, ours included.

Before you read

Read the other comparison tables carefully.

Search “best forex backtesting software” and nearly every result is a vendor ranking itself first. TradeZella publishes “10 Best Backtesting Software.” Forex Tester publishes “Top 8 Forex Tester Alternatives.” FX Replay publishes “4 Tools Compared.” Each concludes with itself.

None of them is neutral, and neither are we. So this table states where each tool leads. Where another tool leads, on tick data, market breadth, broker import or coded testing, its cells say so. So do ours where BacktestFlow leads: execution discipline metrics, and a replay that waits until every trade is recorded.

This table covers eight tools. Our guide to thebest forex backtesting software covers ten, including BacktestingMax, Traders Casa and Myfxbook Backtest. Each gets a short verdict on what it is for.

Choosing between FX Replay and Forex Tester? The FX Replay vs Forex Tester comparison puts the two side by side, with BacktestFlow as a third column.

“Not documented” means the vendor does not state it publicly, not that the feature is absent. Execution discipline: TraderBuddy's MoodTracker covers the emotional side; no other tool documents checklist or R:R capture metrics. Verified between August and October 2026, each comparison page with its own date; software changes, so check anything decisive at the source.

Picks

Which one should you actually use? A few lines each on when a tool is the right call, BacktestFlow first.

BacktestFlow

You trade forex by hand and want evidence that your strategy has an edge. Every trade is recorded before the replay moves on. Flow Coach keeps a finding only if it passes a significance check. The statistics also measure execution: planned against captured R:R and sizing consistency on every plan, checklist discipline on paid plans. Statistics read in pips, and nothing needs installing.

Forex Tester

You want the deepest data in the browser: tick data over as much as 23 years and up to 10 synced charts. It also runs coded strategies next to manual ones, and a desktop version works offline. On data fidelity it leads everything here.

FX Replay

You trade several markets and want breadth in the browser: futures, stocks, crypto and more. It adds candles below one minute, a prop firm simulator, its own scripting and Monte Carlo.

TradeZella

You want automatic broker import across 500+ brokers, automated plain English backtesting, or tooling for funded accounts.

TraderBuddy

You want journaling and backtesting organized around strategies, with a mood tracker, a community, and a MetaTrader account link on the top plan.

MetaTrader Strategy Tester

Your strategy is or could be an Expert Advisor. Parameter optimization and real tick modeling, free, in the terminal you already trade through.

Soft4FX

You live inside MetaTrader and want tick accurate manual simulation with rewind, without leaving the platform.

TradingView Bar Replay

You want free practice inside charts you already use, and you are not going to analyze the results systematically.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

It depends on the job. For manual forex backtesting that measures how you execute, with every trade recorded and findings that must pass a significance check: BacktestFlow. For data depth, Forex Tester leads with tick data over as much as 23 years. For market breadth in a browser, FX Replay covers futures, forex, stocks, indices, crypto and more. For broker import, TradeZella. For testing coded strategies, the MetaTrader Strategy Tester.

The browser based ones: BacktestFlow, Forex Tester Online, FX Replay, TradeZella, TraderBuddy and TradingView Bar Replay all run on macOS as they are. The MetaTrader Strategy Tester and Soft4FX require Windows, and so does Forex Tester's older desktop version. Forex Tester's own guide describes running it on a Mac through Parallels.

All of the manual replay tools: BacktestFlow, Forex Tester, FX Replay, Soft4FX, TradingView Bar Replay, TraderBuddy and TradeZella's manual mode. You step through historical candles and place trades yourself. The MetaTrader Strategy Tester is the outlier: it is built around coded Expert Advisors, and manual testing there is a workaround.

Forex Tester, on the evidence available. Forex Tester Online forms its candles from tick data over as much as 23 years across 283 assets. EURUSD, GBPUSD and USDJPY start in May 2003. Soft4FX also offers tick data with real variable spreads over 10 to 20 years. BacktestFlow replays 1 minute OHLC candles, forex from 2010 to 2015 depending on pair. For strategies on 15 minute charts and above, one minute candles are usually enough.

Because the right tool depends on the job. The table shows where each tool leads, BacktestFlow included, and the picks name who each one fits. You decide on the rows that matter to you.
