Best Forex Backtesting Software in 2026: 10 Tools Compared
10 forex backtesting tools checked at the source, by fit: discretionary, coded, MetaTrader, budget, and forex depth with every trade recorded.
The best forex backtesting software depends on how you trade. For manual replay across several markets, FX Replay and Forex Tester Online lead on breadth and data. For manual forex testing that measures your execution, BacktestFlow goes deep: every trade recorded before the replay moves on, and statistics in pips.
If you already work in MetaTrader, Soft4FX adds replay to it. For strategies written as code, the MetaTrader Strategy Tester is the standard, and free. On a budget, BacktestingMax, Traders Casa and Myfxbook all have free plans.
Below are the 10 tools, what each one is for, and where each one stops. Every claim comes from the vendor’s own site or documentation, and the check date is in the sources at the end.
Disclosure: We make BacktestFlow, one of the tools below. Every tool, ours included, follows the same rules: claims from the vendor’s own material, strengths before limits, and no prices. Nothing here is financial advice. Backtested performance does not guarantee future results.

How we chose
A forex backtesting tool has to do three things for a manual trader. It replays history without showing the future, fills orders at the prices the chart showed, and keeps a record you can compute statistics from.
Two tools here are not built for all three: TradingView Bar Replay and the MetaTrader Strategy Tester. Many traders already have them, so we cover whether they are enough.
We did not rank on price, because prices change, and we did not use ratings or user counts we cannot verify.
1. FX Replay
A browser based backtesting and trading practice platform that goes wide across markets. You replay the chart and trade it, and trades go into its journal with on chart review.
- Strengths: Futures, forex, stocks, indices and crypto in one place, and its FAQ also names metals, energy and agricultural markets. A seconds timeframe, with 5 second candles on many forex pairs. Forex history starting between 2002 and 2005, depending on pair and broker feed. Multi pair and multi chart layouts. A prop firm simulator, Monte Carlo, Mentor AI feedback on your trading behavior, and FXR Script for your own indicators.
- Limits: Forex is one of many markets, read through the same time based analytics rather than tools of its own.
- Choose it if you trade more than forex, or want seconds data and several charts at once.

2. Forex Tester Online
The long established manual backtesting name, now mainly a browser product, with a desktop version still available. It covers manual and algorithmic testing in one platform.
- Strengths: Tick by tick data forming each candle, with spreads, swaps and commissions simulated. EURUSD, GBPUSD, USDJPY and gold from May 2003. Up to 10 synced charts across symbols and timeframes. Jumps to indicator crossovers, level touches, session opens and news events. A prop firm simulator, an Exit Optimizer and session analysis.
- Limits: The desktop version is Windows software, and Forex Tester’s own guide runs it on a Mac through Parallels Desktop. The browser version avoids that.
- Choose it if you need tick data for scalping, or want to test manual and coded systems side by side.

3. Soft4FX Forex Simulator
A plugin that turns MetaTrader 4 or 5 into a replay simulator, using MetaTrader’s own charts, templates and drawing tools.
- Strengths: Step forward and move backward candle by candle, on any timeframe. Pending orders, trailing stops, partial closes and automatic break even. The simulation can pause itself when a stop, target or pending order is hit. Several currency pairs on synchronized charts in the MT5 version. Seconds, Renko, range and tick charts. 10 to 20 years of tick data from Dukascopy, TrueFX and HistData. Results export to Excel or an HTML report.
- Limits: You need MetaTrader installed, which on a Mac usually means a virtual machine or a similar workaround.
- Choose it if MetaTrader is already where you trade and you want to backtest in the same environment.

4. BacktestFlow
BacktestFlow is manual backtesting software for forex traders who trade by hand. You replay history candle by candle, and every trade is recorded before the replay moves on.
- Strengths: Every close opens a write up, and the replay waits until it is saved. So the sample can’t lose the trades you’d rather forget. Flow Coach runs 28 analyses and keeps a finding only if it passes a significance check. Statistics in pips, and candles on the DST aware 17:00 New York session grid.
- On the Pro and Max plans: More than 40 metrics in five sections. They add performance by trading session and checklist discipline. Planned against captured risk to reward, target hit rate and sizing consistency are on every plan. Prop firm challenge mode, a simulation on historical candles, and Monte Carlo on your own R multiples.
- On the Max plan: Rewind 1 to 50 candles, and a developer rebuilds your own Pine Script® indicator.
- Limits: Forex first by design: nothing below one minute, no tick data, no broker import, and one chart per session. The free plan covers 8 instruments and the Verdict and Edge sections.
- Choose it if you trade forex by hand and want to know whether you followed your own process, not only whether it made money.

5. TradingView Bar Replay
A replay feature inside TradingView rather than a backtester, and the one many traders already have.
- Strengths: Effectively every market TradingView lists. Pine Script® and the community indicator library. All charts in a layout can replay in sync. EURUSD minute data from November 2001, and second based bars from August 2022.
- Limits: TradingView’s documentation says trading orders during replay are executed using real time data, Paper Trading included. So there is no simulated fill at the replayed price, and nothing is recorded. You keep the book yourself, which is one reason backtest results don’t match live trading.
- Choose it if you want to practice reading charts, or you are happy to track trades in a spreadsheet.

6. BacktestingMax
A free browser backtester on TradingView charts that pairs manual replay with an AI chat that writes and backtests rule based strategies.
- Strengths: Forex and metals are free, with a premium plan for other markets. Over 250 instruments. A prop firm challenge simulator with presets for firms including FTMO, Topstep and Apex. It tracks profit target, daily loss and trailing drawdown to a pass or fail. The AI chat runs strategies described in plain English on one minute history.
- Limits: The AI chat is limited by daily credits on the free plan. Strategies it writes are rule based, so they test a specification rather than your discretion.
- Choose it if you want a free option, especially for practicing prop firm challenges on forex.

7. Traders Casa
A free bar replay backtester on charts built with TradingView’s technology, with a live trade journal next to it.
- Strengths: The free plan includes unlimited backtest sessions, six months of backtest data, a profit and loss graph and a consistency tracker. Live trades can be imported, or synced from a broker. Over 300 insights and reports.
- Limits: Six months of data on the free plan is short for testing a strategy across different market regimes. More history needs a paid plan.
- Choose it if you want free replay and a live journal in one place, and you test recent market behavior.
8. Myfxbook Backtest
A free replay tool from Myfxbook, a site better known for account tracking and its calculators.
- Strengths: Free with a registered Myfxbook account. More than 20 years of historical data, down to one minute candles. Multiple synchronized charts. Hundreds of symbols across currencies, crypto, metals, indices and commodities.
- Limits: It is a replay and practice tool on a much larger site. A statistics suite on the scale of the dedicated platforms is not documented.
- Choose it if you want deep history for free and don’t need a full statistics suite.
9. TradeZella
A trading journal first, with backtesting built next to it in three modes: guided scenarios, manual replay, and automated tests described in plain English.
- Strengths: Automated testing from a strategy you describe in plain English, with an edge verdict. Guided scenarios. Backtested trades flow into the same journal as live ones. Futures, stocks, forex, crypto and options, with data since September 2014.
- Limits: Forex is one of five asset classes rather than the focus, and the product is built journal first.
- Choose it if you want your journal and your backtesting in the same place, across several markets.

10. MetaTrader Strategy Tester
Built into MetaTrader 4 and 5, and built for testing Expert Advisors: strategies written in MQL.
- Strengths: Free, and your broker has probably already given it to you. Real tick modeling with configurable modeling quality. Parameter optimization across large numbers of runs. A very large marketplace of Expert Advisors and indicators.
- Limits: Manual trading is reached through Visual Mode, plugins or toolkits traders build themselves, as MQL5’s own articles show. The report is built around EA runs, so hand placed trades leave you keeping your own record.
- Choose it if your strategy can be written as code.

How to choose
Four questions decide most of it.
- Can your strategy be written as code? If yes, test it automatically: the MetaTrader Strategy Tester, Forex Tester’s algorithmic side, or an automated mode like TradeZella’s or BacktestingMax’s. If it depends on your judgment, you need manual replay.
- Is forex your main market? A forex first tool goes deeper on pips and sessions, and BacktestFlow is built for it. If you also trade futures or stocks, FX Replay, Forex Tester or TradeZella cover more markets.
- Does your strategy live inside a single candle? Scalping and tight stops need tick data and modeled spreads: Forex Tester or Soft4FX. For 15 minute charts and above, one minute candles are usually enough.
- What do you want out of the test? A verdict on a strategy needs a large enough sample. It takes about 385 trades to tell a 55% win rate from a coin flip, as how many trades you need works through. You can also put error bars on your own win rate. BacktestFlow won’t move the replay on until each trade is saved, so that sample can’t quietly lose its worst trades.
Whichever you pick, try two on the same strategy for a week. Most have a free plan or demo, and that comparison will tell you more than any table, including this one. The comparison chart puts the dedicated tools side by side, feature by feature.

FAQ
Questions this article answers.
There is no single best: the tools solve different problems. For manual replay across several markets, FX Replay and Forex Tester Online lead on breadth and data depth. For manual forex testing that records every trade and measures your execution, BacktestFlow goes deep. Soft4FX fits if you already work in MetaTrader. The MetaTrader Strategy Tester is the standard for strategies written as code.
Yes. BacktestingMax keeps forex and metals free. Traders Casa has a free plan with six months of backtest data. Myfxbook Backtest is free with a Myfxbook account and more than 20 years of historical data. The MetaTrader Strategy Tester is free for coded strategies. TradingView Bar Replay works on TradingView's free tier. BacktestFlow has a free plan on 8 instruments, with every trade recorded and the Verdict and Edge statistics.
You can replay forex charts with Bar Replay, which is useful practice. It is not a full backtester. TradingView's documentation says trading orders during replay are executed using real time data, Paper Trading included. Bar Replay also keeps no record of trades, so you track every trade and compute the statistics yourself.
It depends on whether your strategy can be written as rules a computer can follow. A strategy fully expressed in code is best tested automatically, across thousands of trades, with a tool like the MetaTrader Strategy Tester. A discretionary strategy, where you read context and decide, can only be tested by replaying the chart and trading it by hand.
Only if your strategy lives inside a single candle: scalping, very tight stops, or entries that depend on the spread. For strategies on 15 minute charts and above, one minute candles are usually enough. Forex Tester and Soft4FX offer tick data with modeled spreads when you do need it.
