Where BacktestFlow leads

Built deeper for forex traders who trade by hand. The reasons to pick BacktestFlow, each with the mechanism behind it.

“Trading orders are executed using real-time data, including those in Paper Trading and with other brokers”

Source:TradingView, Bar Replay documentation

BacktestFlow fills orders on the replayed candles and checks stop and target in the same bar, so every result belongs to the history you replayed.

  1. A record you cannot skip

Bar Replay leaves the record to you. Here every close opens a write up with notes, tags, checklist and screenshots, and the replay waits until it is saved. A screenshot with your order lines can be captured automatically. The sample keeps the trades you would rather forget, instead of drifting into a sample too thin to conclude anything from.

  2. A coach that can't invent a number

Flow Coach runs 28 analyses across your backtests and your live journal. A finding is kept only if it passes a significance check: a 90% Wilson interval and a group of at least 8 trades. The written report may only quote numbers the engine measured.

  3. Execution, measured

The statistics show how you executed. Every plan measures planned against captured risk to reward, target hit rate and position sizing consistency, and paid plans add the checklist discipline score. That separates a strategy problem from an execution problem: see why your backtest doesn't match your live trading.

  4. Statistics in pips, down to the session

On paid plans, every trade feeds more than 40 metrics in five sections, in R, %, money or pips. Results break down by pair, hour, weekday and trading session, so you measure when your strategy works instead of assuming it.

  5. No future price on a timeframe switch

Switching timeframe rebuilds the current candle only from bars you have already replayed, so a higher timeframe never shows price that hasn't happened yet. That is how our replay is built; TradingView's documentation does not describe its own behavior here.

  6. Your Pine Script® indicator, rebuilt for the replay

On the Max plan, send the code of the Pine Script® indicator you already trade. A developer rebuilds it by hand for the BacktestFlow chart, so it behaves like the original. How Pine Script® requests work.

Where TradingView Bar Replay leads

When TradingView Bar Replay fits better. Where the job decides it.

  • Your charts and indicators already live on TradingView.

Bar Replay runs inside your own layouts, with your Pine Script® and the community library one click away. If you'd rather not move your setup, it is the better fit.

  • You want replay below one minute.

TradingView offers second based replay data from August 2022. BacktestFlow replays from 1 minute up, which suits strategies read on 15 minute charts and above.

  • You want practice, not measurement.

If you step through charts to train your eye and won't analyze the trades, Bar Replay gives you that on a platform you already have.

The short answer

Which should you use?

If this is you

Choose TradingView Bar Replay

You trade many markets on TradingView and write your own Pine Script®. Or you want replay below one minute, several charts in sync, or practice without recording trades.

If this is you

Choose BacktestFlow

You trade forex by hand and want every replayed trade recorded and measured as you go. That includes whether you followed your own process, not just what you made.

The two work side by side: TradingView for charting and market coverage, BacktestFlow for testing a forex strategy and measuring the result.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions. About TradingView Bar Replay, and about the differences.

It is good for practice: stepping a chart forward to see how a setup behaves, on a platform you may already use. As a measurement tool it stops short. Bar Replay keeps no trade record and computes no statistics, so you supply the spreadsheet. Its orders also fill on real time data rather than on the replayed candles.

Bar Replay is usable on the free tier of TradingView, but how far back you can replay intraday data depends on your plan. The documentation says lower timeframe replay stops where the plan's intraday limit is reached. We quote no prices because they change, so check TradingView's own pricing page. BacktestFlow has a free plan too, with replay and the full trade record.

Several third party guides report that switching to a higher timeframe mid replay can briefly reveal bars that have not yet occurred. TradingView's own documentation does not confirm this. It describes the opposite direction instead: switching to a lower timeframe without data shows 'Data point unavailable' and keeps the timeframe. Treat those reports as unconfirmed, and check them yourself if they matter. In BacktestFlow, switching timeframe rebuilds the current candle only from bars already replayed.

Not as a step back control. TradingView's documentation describes stepping forward and choosing a new starting bar, which restarts from an earlier point rather than undoing the last few candles. On the Max plan, BacktestFlow rewinds: a slider moves the replay back 1 to 50 candles, with a red line previewing the cut. It is blocked while a position is open.

The timeframe sets the workload. Count a year of forex as 52 weeks of 120 trading hours. That is 6,240 candles on the 1 hour chart, 24,960 on the 15 minute chart and 74,880 on the 5 minute chart. Your pace sets the rest. With Bar Replay, logging each trade in a spreadsheet adds to that time.

Both replay history on TradingView charts. Bar Replay goes wide: every market, deep history, several charts in sync. BacktestFlow goes deep on forex: orders fill on the replayed candles and every trade is recorded before the replay moves on. Flow Coach keeps a finding only if it passes a significance check.
