If this is you
Choose Forex Tester
You want a full backtester: tick data with simulated costs, up to 10 synced charts, robots next to manual trades, blind testing, and a prop firm simulator with an optimizer.
Forex Tester vs TradingView Bar Replay
Forex Tester Online and TradingView Bar Replay both step history forward candle by candle. Forex Tester is built to backtest: orders fill on tick data, with spreads, swaps and commissions simulated. Bar Replay is a charting feature, and its orders fill on real time data. BacktestFlow goes deep on forex: every trade recorded, every finding checked for significance.
The difference that decides it
Forex Tester's own plan table lists “True backtesting, not bar replay” as a feature. The two tools sit on either side of that line.
On Forex Tester Online, an order fills on the simulated history. Candles are formed from tick data, and spreads, swaps and commissions are simulated. Trades and notes stay in the backtest project, with tags, screenshots, checklists and a confidence level on each one.
TradingView Bar Replay moves the chart into the past, but not the order panel. Its documentation says orders during replay “are executed using real-time data, including those in Paper Trading”. It keeps no trade record, so the spreadsheet is yours to keep.
So Forex Tester leads most rows about testing: fills, costs, robots and the prop firm simulator. Bar Replay leads where TradingView leads as a platform: market coverage, Pine Script® and replay below one minute.
BacktestFlow sits on the testing side too, built for forex traded by hand. Orders fill on the replayed candles, and the replay waits until every trade is recorded. Our Forex Tester alternative and Bar Replay alternative pages go row by row.

The short answer
If this is you
You want a full backtester: tick data with simulated costs, up to 10 synced charts, robots next to manual trades, blind testing, and a prop firm simulator with an optimizer.
If this is you
You already chart on TradingView and want to practice reading price across any market with your own Pine Script®. You are happy to keep the trade record yourself.
If this is you
You trade forex by hand and want two answers: whether the strategy has an edge, and whether you followed it. Every trade is recorded before the replay moves on, and execution is measured on every plan.
FAQ
For backtesting, yes. Forex Tester Online fills orders on simulated history, forms candles from tick data and simulates spreads, swaps and commissions. TradingView Bar Replay fills orders on real time data and keeps no trade record. TradingView leads on charting, markets and Pine Script®; Forex Tester leads on testing.
You can replay charts on TradingView's free tier, but how far back intraday replay goes depends on your plan. Bar Replay records nothing, so a free backtest there means logging every trade in a spreadsheet. Forex Tester offers a free demo with no credit card. BacktestFlow has a free plan, with replay and the full trade record.
It depends on what you test. Bar Replay is bar based: its documentation says it does not work with tick based charts, and orders fill on real time data. Forex Tester Online forms each candle from tick data. For strategies on 15 minute charts and above, one minute candles are usually enough, as long as fills happen on the replayed bars.
On forex minute data they are close. TradingView lists EURUSD one minute data from November 28, 2001. Forex Tester lists EURUSD, GBPUSD, USDJPY and gold from May 6, 2003, with tick data behind each candle. Below one minute, TradingView's second based bars start on August 17, 2022, while Forex Tester's smallest timeframe is 1 minute.
Yes. Forex Tester Online runs in any browser, on desktop and mobile, with nothing to install. A separate desktop version works without an internet connection. Bar Replay runs inside TradingView itself. BacktestFlow runs in the browser too, the same on macOS, Windows and Linux.
Forex Tester goes wide on data and method, Bar Replay across every market TradingView lists. BacktestFlow goes deep on forex execution. Orders fill on the replayed candles, the replay waits until every trade is recorded, and Flow Coach keeps a finding only if it passes a significance check. On paid plans, results break down by trading session.
